A new trend that has emerged this past summer and is still riding high has been the introduction of holographic or prismatic lip colors! It sounds so out there, I know. I am familiar with and even donned holographic nails. Essie Twill Seeker is one of my favorite fall/winter shades, see it in full display here. I find holographic nail polishes quite wearable and even see an element of interesting sophistication with the trend. But holographic lips for every day wear? Definitely not something I would consider. But don’t knock it ‘til you try it, right? Buxom Cosmetics recently expanded its repertoire of Full-On Plumping Lip Polish products to include 8 new shades of prismatic colors. And to my surprise, all very wearable and perfect for day to day.
Prismatic Colors
Buxom makes some of my favorite lip glosses. I have previously swatched their entire collection in a previous post here. Their formulas are always so moisturizing and comfortable on my lips. So I was quite intrigued to delve into the mesmerizing world of holographic lips and try the trend. There are 8 new colors with a metallic finish and a shifting, iridescent effect.
- Ariana – clear base with fine gold shimmers. It looks really gold in the tube, but I was surprised by how versatile this shade really is. The shimmers are incredibly fine and evenly veil the lips, adding a subtle luminosity to the pout.
- Jordan – light blue base with ultra-fine rainbow shimmers. This is the shade that surprised me the most. It is such a mesmerizing prismatic color, changing with the light and shifting between icy to pearlescent.
- Camila – copper base with fine gold shimmers. It’s slightly more opaque than the rest. Beautiful to wear on its own.
- Savannah – peachy base with fine gold shimmers, my personal favorite. It reminds of one of the first high-end glosses I ever owned, Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Lucky.
- Crystal – plum color base with iridescent multi-dimensional metallic pink and blue shimmers, perfect for fall/winter.
- Selena – clear base with iridescent multi-dimensional shimmers in metallic pink, purple and blue. It’s has such a gorgeous pearlescent finish.
- Mariah – soft pink base with fine metallic green and gold shimmers and a pearlescent finish.
- Iris – berry base with fine metallic blue shimmers.
Unfortunately, I don’t think these swatches managed to capture the mesmerizing finish of these iridescent colors and the way the color shifts with light and movement. You can see the shimmers but not the way they reflect the light and the shifting effect. I highly suggest checking these colors out in person if you can. They are simply stunning.
All these colors can be worn alone or as lip toppers, applied on top of your favorite lipstick to add luminosity and dimension. They’re all part of the Buxom Lip Polish family, so they’re slightly shearer than the Buxom Lip Creams which are more opaque and vibrant. See swatches in a previous post here.
Unlike the typical Buxom doe-foot brush, the applicator for these prismatic colors is made from silicone and has a unique rectangular shape meant to help layer the color. To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of the applicator. The shape doesn’t seem very precise around the contour of the lips. I find it a bit stiff and as a result, it tends to move and separate the color on the lips. Perhaps there is a learning curve that comes with this new design. However, despite my inability to easily use the applicator, I would still purchase and recommend these glosses. The formula and colors are just that good!
So, we’re in the midst of the holiday season. Office Christmas parties, family dinners and New Year’s celebrations all call for festive makeup. Will you be considering these fun, mesmerizing prismatic colors from Buxom?
