It’s always refreshing to see brands taking feedback from their fans and recently, Drunk Elephant has done just that. They listened intently to their customers, paid attention to their needs and released a cleansing oil balm which is gentle, yet incredibly effective that I am now seriously impressed! I’m talking about Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter, a cleanser which will now be joining their famous Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser, previously reviewed here. Slaai has managed to pull me away from an old favorite, the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (discussed in a previous post here). And with a big tug, I might add.

Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser
Slaai is an innovating multi-tasking product. It masterfully melts away all traces of dirt, makeup and sunscreen from face and eyes. And it does so while nourishing and protecting the skin’s natural barrier. In short, it cleanses and moisturizes without any irritants and sensitizers. Yes, it’s gentle enough to use around the delicate eye area. The texture quickly transforms from oil-to-milk upon contact with water.
Some star ingredients:
- clean, antioxidant-rich fruit extracts and oils such as Safflower, Kiwi, Strawberry, Cranberry, Sweet Almond Oil, Blueberry to help soothe and comfort
- nourishing African-oil blend of marula, baobab, Kalahari melon, mongongo and ximenia to nourish and moisturize
- free of silicones, PEGs and essential oils
The cleanser is not scented, but I do detect a subtle smell of Sunflower from the natural wax holding it together. I find the mild scent quite soothing to the senses and not at all overpowering.
Slaai also comes with a vial of charcoal and superfine bamboo, which turns the cleanser into a physical exfoliant that can be used 1-2 times a week. Simply mix a sprinkle of the powder with a little bit of Slaai in the palm of your dry hand. Use this blend to gently exfoliate your cleansed face and lips, but avoiding the eye area.
How To Use
The key is to apply Slaai with dry hands onto dry skin as the texture is quite slippy. A little goes a long way and the magnetic spatula that comes with it provides just the right amount. I place a scoop of Slaai in the palm of my hand, mixing it with my fingers to create a creamy paste. I apply the paste all over the face and eyes, gently massaging it into the skin as it transforms into an oil. Upon contact with water, the oil transforms into a cleansing milk that feels incredibly soothing and comforting. Rinse with warm water or remove using a damp cloth. I wouldn’t recommend using cold water as it doesn’t emulsify the product that well.
My experience
I recently reviewed the Urban Decay Game of Thrones Makeup Collection (EVERYTHING swatched and detailed here), so I wore a lot of makeup these past few days. It provided just the right opportunity to put Slaai to the test. I am happy to report it has not failed me!
I really like this product. The texture was a bit tricky to work with as initially I didn’t realize you were supposed to use dry hands and apply it on dry skin. But once I figured that out (they do mention it on the packaging), I found myself reaching for this cleanser every night. Slaai doesn’t leave a greasy film over my skin and feels very hydrating. It removes eye makeup without irritating my sensitive eyes (I wear contacts for most of the day). It never leaves my skin feeling dry or tight, which can sometimes happen with other cleansers. I have really enjoyed using this balm and would repurchase.

Hi Cat
The thing I liked hearing about the most is the being able to use it to remove eye makeup…..I’ve not found a product that doesn’t affect my eyes!! I don’t wear much eye makeup but it would be nice to Have to try and remove it by just water, which Isn’t overly effect as I use Benefit mascara and that stays on!!
Hope you are well and will see if I can get a sample of this to try!!
Love and hugs
