I recently took the Dermalogica Biosensitivity quiz to determine just how sensitive or sensitized my skin is at the moment and was pleasantly surprised to learn that my sensitivity risk factor is now moderate. That’s a big accomplishment considering I’m more stressed than before, I’m sleeping less than before and my skin is being exposed to unusually cold temperatures this winter (yes, it snowed in Florida!!). Whether your skin is sensitive (due to genetics) or sensitized (due to environmental and lifestyle factors), the symptoms are actually the same. Dehydration, redness, itching, burning, skin that feels tight and tense. Sometimes avoiding the trigger (for instance, a certain product or food that irritates the skin) can eliminate the symptoms. But what if some triggers can’t be avoided? Think air pollution, environment and temperature sensitivity. Ready for the good news?
The Ultra Calming range from Dermalogica has been specifically created to heal, soothe and protect sensitive and sensitized skin. Every product from this range is formulated without potential irritants such as lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial fragrances or colors. This January, Dermalogica is adding two new products to their Ultra Calming repertoire: the Calm Water Gel Moisturizer and the Ultra Calming Barrier Defense Booster. I’ve been using both for the past three weeks and am excited to share them with you! Hope you enjoy the post and find it helpful!
Dermalogica Calm Water Gel Moisturizer
This is really a dream for dry and dehydrated skin and for me, it’s been an absolute savoir this winter! True to its name, this product is a weightless water-gel moisturizer formulated with some star ingredients:
- dual Hyaluronic Acid working in different layers of the skin to increase and lock in moisture
- Apple Fruit Extract and Glycerin to hydrated and soften the skin while defending against dryness
- Cactus Pear Extract to soothe sensitivity and support a healthy moisture balance
A full list of ingredients can be found here.
I was surprised by how hydrating this moisturizer is considering it has such an incredibly light texture! It absorbs almost instantly, leaving my skin feeling soft, smooth and refreshed. This is like a drink of water for my skin.
Dermalogica Ultra Calming Barrier Defense Booster
This is basically a concentrated serum with a nourishing oil consistency. It works to nurture the skin, relieve dryness and reinforce the barrier against future irritation. Dermalogica has included skin-loving ingredients like Squalane to lock in moisture and sooting Oat Oil to help combat sensitivity. Full list of ingredients can be found here. The booster can be used prior to or mixed with your moisturizer. Although it has an oil consistency, this serum sinks into the skin in seconds and doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind.
Typically, with serums it’s difficult to see instant results, so you might feel like they’re not working. But I think of this booster as a necessary layer if I were going out on a winter walk. It’s not the big fluffy coat, but the comfy sweater that’s keeping me warm and cozy.
How I Use the Dermalogica Ultra Calming Range
I’ve been reaching for the Barrier Defense Booster every morning, in the same way I reach for a glass of water. I squeeze about 5 drops into my palm and rub the hands together. Then I gently pat it onto the skin and neck before applying my moisturizer.
I like to use the Calm Water Gel Moisturizer in the morning, especially on those days when my skin feels dry and dehydrated from the night before or during that time of the month when I experience hormonal flareups, redness and irritation. I simply squeeze a small amount into my palm and rub the hands together to activate the formula. Next, I pat gently onto the face and neck, massaging the skin using upwards and outwards movements. Even my husband has been using this cream every time he shaves, to help soothe and hydrate his skin.
If you take away only one thing from this post, I would say listen to your skin. Pay attention to how it reacts to certain products, the environment and lifestyle choices. Use the right skincare for your skin’s needs. Although the Dermalogica Ultra Calming range is marketed for sensitive skin, it is important to understand that we each experience sensitivity, whether you were born with sensitive skin or your skin is sensitized by external factors, such as the environment and your lifestyle.
What are your thoughts on the Ultra Calming range from Dermalogica? What would you like to try from the brand?

I really like the sound of this Ultra Calming range! I noticed that as I get older my skin just isn’t as resilient to the internal and external stressors anymore, and it definitely shows, so it’s important for me to incorporate products and ingredients that help combat these issues. The Barrier Defense Booster sounds especially lovely, I like that it can be mixed or used alone! Thanks so much for sharing these products Cat!
PS. I tried to click on the quiz link but it returned a page not found 🙁
