Happy New Year my lovely friends! I hope the holidays have been good to you and in the midst of it all, you managed to set aside time for some rest and relaxation. It is my sincerest wish for each and every one of you to be blessed with lots of love and laughter, plenty of special moments and memories, dreams that become a reality and may you all enjoy life to the fullest! Let’s make 2017 a year to remember!
You can probably already tell I’m very excited and ready to kick off the New Year. It seems like the perfect opportunity to reflect, plan for the future and make a fresh start. If last year I gave into the hype (too many Instagram induced purchases, some hugely unnecessary), I’d like to think I’ve grown a year older and a year smarter this time around. I have made it my main goal to become a minimalist in all areas of my life, beauty and skincare included. I’ve decided to cut back on a multi-step / multi-product routine (more isn’t always better) and instead, use only those products that my skin actually needs.
In my quest to find highly effective multi-taskers that would fit in with my new minimalist approach, I stumbled upon Dermalogica’s newest skincare treat, the Daily Superfoliant, a product that spoke to me on so many different levels and that truly deserves the word ‘super’ included in its name.
Why Do You Need It
Dermalogica’s newest launch, having just been released at the beginning of January 2017, is inspired by the brand’s dedication to research and commitment to redefining skin health. Dermalogica experts have proven that air pollution is linked to skin aging. Many pollution particles are small enough to enter pores and start accelerating the skin aging process. The more pollution there is in the atmosphere, the greater the risk of accelerated skin aging. And pollution is EVERYWHERE (even inside our homes), as it is not something that can be completely eliminated from our current environment, regardless if you’re living in a big city or a small, remote town. Dermalogica’s Daily Superfoliant is here to help us combat the side effects of air pollution, no matter where you live! It works to wash away the day by removing build up on skin, detoxifying pores and helping prevent the adherence of skin-aging pollutants.
How It Works
Before we get into how this product works and where the magic lies, let me preface by saying the Daily Superfoliant is NOT to be confused with the Daily Microfoliant. These are two very different offerings from Dermalogica.
The Superfoliant is a highly-active resurfacer that works to deliver smooth skin and helps fight the biochemical and environmental triggers known to accelerate skin aging. The advanced super fine powder formula activates upon contact with water, releasing powerful enzymes and skin-smoothing alpha hydroxy acids that deep cleanse pores to remove pollutants trapped into the skin. The formula contains activated Binchotan Charcoal to absorb environmental irritants and detoxify pores, lactic acid to help rid of dead skin cells, while Niacinamide, Red Algae and Tara Fruit help fight pollution triggers that lead to premature aging.
The product is formulated without artificial fragrances, colors or parabens.
Here is the complete list of ingredients:
Microcrystalline Cellulose, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate, Malic Acid, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Charcoal Powder, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Maltodextrin, Silica, Magnesium Oxide, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Sapindus Trifoliatus Fruit Extract, Niacinamide, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Peel Oil, Zingiber Of cinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Camellia Sinensis Leaf, Kappaphycus Alvarezii Extract, Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Pod Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Rosmarinus Of cinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Salvia Of cinalis (Sage) Oil, Subtilisin, Lipase, Papain, Lactic Acid, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Xanthan Gum, Water/Aqua/Eau, Coconut Acid, Calcium Lactate, Capryloyl Glycine, Undecylenoyl Glycine, Cetrimonium Chloride, Limonene, Linalool
How to Use
Don’t let the powder formula intimidate you. In fact, the Superfoliant is super easy to use (pun intended). I actually prefer a powder consistency as it gives control over how much product to use each time.
Start by removing your makeup and cleansing your face with the cleanser of your choice. Dispense about a half-teaspoon of Superfoliant into wet hands and create a creamy paste by rubbing the hands together. Massage onto face for about one minute using circular motions and avoiding the eye area. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. I find that the Superfoliant draws everything out without aggravating the skin, leaves my face feeling soft and my complexion appears more radiant and healthy-looking.
Per the Dermalogica site, the Superfoliant can be used daily (sensitive skin should alternate days until skin acclimates). I personally like to use it about once a week. I have very sensitive skin and in general, I exfoliate once to twice a week at the most. I have discussed in detail How to Exfoliate at Home here.
Dermalogica have very kindly offered Cat’s Daily Living readers a chance to try ANY of their products for 20% off. Use coupon code DailyCat20 at checkout for 20% off ANY PURCHASE on Dermalogica’s site.

Sounds so good Cat ! I don’t use a lot this type of exfoliant to avoid to irritate my dry and sensitive skin but the ingredients list is so great that I put it on my list 😉
Kisses and wish you the perfect start to 2017 ! Happy New Year !

Hi Kédidja, thank you for stopping by. I find that this exfoliant is not too abrasive for my sensitive skin when used once to twice a week at the most. I don’t have another product in my skincare stash that addresses skin pollution and this one is a great option. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have if you get a chance to try it! ~ Cat L.

Lovely post Cat~~ I can definitely relate to “instagram induced” unnecessary purchases of 2016 hehe Some I regret and some I’m actually happy to have discovered^^
I used to be a big fan of Dermalogica Microfoliant and first thought that this new Superfoliant is an updated version of Microfoliant… but thanks to your post now I know they are different products altogether! It sounds like a great product! I missed out on trying out this new released because Dermalogica didn’t wana send it out to me all the way out in Korea haha but now I feel like i might just wana purchase it online or look for it in Korea to try it!

Hi Lisa, thank you for reading my post and for your comment. I think you would really enjoy this product, do try it if you get a chance. Glad you found the post helpful! ~ Cat L.

Cat says
Hi Esnath, thank you for reading. Yes, sadly pollution is everywhere and it doesn’t seem like it’s something that will go away any time soon. As such, finding ways to combat the side effects is key. The Superfoliant is the only product that I’ve heard of and tried that actually works to fight off the effects of pollution on our skin. I definitely encourage you to try this product. ~ Cat L.

Thank you so much for the lovely review Cat! I always thought that now I’m working from home pollution doesn’t affect me anymore but the more you know! I really like how it’s a powder form as well, makes it easier to travel with and decant 🙂 I have too many cleansers already, but both the superfoliant and the microfoliant sound too lovely to not purchase.
Cat says
Hi Jenny, thank you for stopping by. I know you are a skincare enthusiast as well, so I really appreciate your feedback. Yes, same here. I was also very surprised to find out that pollution can affect your skin even when you spend most of your time working in the comfort of your home. I have really enjoyed learning about this product and using it on my skin, as I never had a similar product in my skincare stash before. Hope you get a chance to try it and if you do, hope you enjoy it as much as I have. ~ Cat L.

Hey cat, I’ve been trying to narrow my skincare down too lately I have so many products I think my skin doesn’t know wether it’s coming or going. I haven’t used dermalogica in years but remember their products being highly effective. This sounds really good, in particular for its anti ageing properties. Will check this out for sure.

Hi Lisa, thank you for stopping by. I first started using Dermalogica products back in my younger days, when I first discovered skincare. But then I wandered off and tried a multitude of other products along the way, only to realize that often times more isn’t always better. The Superfoliant is based on such an innovative concept, combating the effects of pollution on our skin, that I knew I had to try it. I have really enjoyed using it and I find that it’s not too abrasive for my sensitive skin when used once to twice a week. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have if you get a chance to try it! ~ Cat L.

Even with a mask on you look sooo cute!! I havent launched myself with this brand but definitely if I find this it will be my first purchase as Madrid is such a high polluted city!
Thanks so much for the insight view!
Cat says
Thank you so much for the compliment! You are far too kind ! I really appreciate it. I think you would really enjoy this product, especially living in a city like Madrid. Although, pollution is literarily everywhere, even in small remote towns and even in our homes. Hope you do get a chance to try the Dermalogica Superfoliant! Keep me posted! ~ Cat L.

Happy New Year Cat 🙂 I have a Daily Microfoliant and I love it. This one does sound like more potent product though. Now I’m very tempted to purchase it, as I’m not a big fan of a traditional scrub, but it sounds like it’s not that type of exfoliator.
Cat says
Hi Anna, thank you for stopping by. Given that you like the Microfoliant, it’s safe to say I think you would love the Superfoliant. It is a more potent resurfacer that works to draw out impurities and combat the side effects of pollution in our skin. It is not too abrasive and the powder formula allows you to control how much product to dispense. It’s also formulated with alpha hydroxy acids and lactic acid. Do keep me posted if you get a chance to try it. ~ Cat L.

I’m pretty certain you’re right. Added to my shopping list 🙂

This sounds amazing! I very much worry about the pollution in the air, especially living in a metropolitan area. Such a multitasking product would be perfect for a minimalist routine. I think you’ve convinced me to try this one from Dermalogica! I love powder exfoliators and the ingredients in this one look great. Fab review as always!
Cat says
Hi Jenn, thank you for stopping by. This is indeed a product like no other, definitely give it a try, as I think you would enjoy it as much as I have. Glad you found the review helpful! ~ Cat L.
Lily says
Amazing review! It sounds like a great product, but I wonder if its safe to use on sensitive skin? My skin is super sensitive and I often struggle to find good products.
Cat says
Hi Lily, thank you for stopping by. I also have sensitive skin and am always a little worried about exfoliators as they can be too abrasive and break out my skin. I have been pleasantly surprised by the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant as it doesn’t seem to aggravate my super sensitive skin. Having said that, however, I do not recommend using it more than once or twice a week at the most if you have sensitive skin. Hope this helps! ~ Cat L.

Thank you so much! Your review is very detailed and helpful! ❤️

This Superexfoliant sounds amazing Cat. I am currently using Kate Somerville products in my rotation about once or twice a week and I just love how baby soft my skin feels afterwards. I want to look into trying out their products as I have not yet before. Once again, thank you for a thorough review and I wish you everything your heart so desires to come to fruition in the new year!

Hi Dom, thank you for stopping by. I did see your Instagram post on the Kate Somerville products that you’re using and those are also some of my favorites as well. I adore Kate Somerville skincare and have reviewed some of their products in the past. It is one of those brands I always find myself reaching for and I can’t picture my skincare stash without her products included. I also do like to switch up my routine every now and then so as the skin doesn’t get used to using the same products and then those products are no longer as effective. Dermalogica is another one of those brands I like to always keep on current rotation. Their Superfoliant is a product like no other (ie it also addresses skin pollution). Definitely give it a try if you get a chance! ~ Cat L.

Helloooo!!! So nice to see your beautiful face there and a peek into your home! This sounds good, and the ingredients seem interesting! I always love seeing Niacinamide in skincare!
Cat says
Hi Linda, thank you for stopping by! Thank you so much for your lovely words! A BIG yes to Niacinamide in skincare! I’m also a fan! Definitely try the Superfoliant if you get a chance and let me know your thoughts. If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend using this only once a week.
Hope you enjoyed the post! ~ Cat L

I’ve never tried Dermalogica but I’ve heard a lot of good things about this brand. Now I am tempted to try Dermalogica because this product seems impressive. I’ve tried different products for my pores, but they’re still big and they still get clogged which results to endless blackheads/whiteheads.
This is a very detailed review, thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this in-depth review, I really enjoyed reading it. The grey powder looks very strange at first but I agree, that it’s easy to use and I can imagine that the bottle lasts quite some time. I’ve never tried anything from the brand as it is not easily available here.
Have a wonderful week head

Hi, this exfoliant powder looks like fairy dust :-). I understand why you would use it just once a week, because my skin is sensitive too. Thanks for an informative post. Wishing you the best in 2017!

I definitely thought this was the microfoliant (like you said not to) when I first saw your title! The superfoliant sounds wonderful, and I’m completely with you on stripping back a little – I took a look at my skincare collection and thought Oh my…! Another thorough and detailed review Cat, it makes these kinds of posts so helpful so thank you for sharing!

Erin M says
I’ve been scouring the internet for information explaining why this BURNS my skin so badly but I can’t find one post about it. I am a huge fan of the microfoliant and it didn’t burn. I use Retin-A nightly maybe it’s reacting to the ingredients in the superfoliant? Any thoughts? Thank you!
Cat says
Hi Erin, so sorry to hear about your experience using this product. The Superfoliant and Microfoliant are similar in that they both use Dermalogica’s powder technology but that is where the similarities end. The Superfoliant provides a more intense exfoliation, it opens up pores (to draw out pollutants, grime, impurities) and resurfaces the skin. The Microfoliant also exfoliates but focuses on brightening the skin, tightening the pores and calms using soothing oatmeal. I would suggest that people with sensitive or dry skin only use this about once a week. Using Retin-A will increase your skin’s sensitivity to products such as the Superfoliant. Hope this helps. If you require further advice, I would suggest contacting Dermalogica by leaving a comment on one of their posts on Instagram. They tend to respond quickly. ~ Cat L.
