Hyaluronic Acid. Sounds so … acidic! To be completely honest, the name itself sends shivers down my spine. It takes me back to distant chemistry classes, sitting small in a big auditorium, listening to names and formulas I could not grasp. But don’t fret. The point of this post is not to overwhelm you with incomprehensible chemistry ingredients. But to get you to understand the incredible benefits of Hyaluronic Acid for your skin and get you to go out there, find a product that contains Hyaluronic Acid and start using it. Pronto. I will also share with you a serum I’ve been using for a few months now, the Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier, which I previously included in My Minimalist Skincare Routine here. It’s one of THE best Hyaluronic Acid serums I’ve ever tried and I’ll tell you why.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a substance found naturally in the body where it acts as a lubricant, benefiting tissue repair and protection. It has the unique ability to provide incredible moisture by retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water. Thus plumping and creating fullness. The result is younger-, healthier-looking and suppler skin.
Skincare Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is one of the most interesting ingredients in skincare. As we age and begin to lose this naturally occurring acid, the skin starts loosing elasticity. It begins to sag and develop wrinkles. Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to penetrate the upper layers of the skin to:
-
-
-
- Boost skin hydration and moisture levels
- Improve skin elasticity
- Plump the skin thus diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Increase skin smoothness thus ameliorating the skin’s texture
- Protect the skin from harmful UVB rays which can cause sunspots
-
-
Many beauty products available these days feature a high concentration of this acid. It can be found in creams, serums and injectibles (ie. Restylane).
How I’ve incorporated Hyaluronic Acid in my Beauty Routine
I’ve been using Hyaluronic Acid in various skincare products over the years without even realizing it. Had I seen the word Acid I think I would’ve run. My skin is usually dehydrated and sensitive. I tend to reach for products promising moisture and hydration. Acid seems the opposite, doesn’t it? But don’t let the name fool you. Most ‘hydrating’ products out there contain some type of hyaluronic acid. Two of my go-to masks this winter, the Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Pink Mask (reviewed in great detail here) and my Clarins SOS Hydra Mask (detailed here) feature high concentrations of this ingredient.
One of my favorite Hyaluronic Acid products is the Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier Serum. I’m currently on my second bottle. I initially bought this after an aesthetician used it on me during a facial a few months ago. She first treated my skin with the Skinceuticals Vitamin C E & Ferulic Serum (an old favorite of mine), after which she applied a few drops of the H.A. Intensifier. I immediately loved the way it left my skin feeling. The H.A. Intensifier has a thicker fluid consistency that absorbs quickly into the skin. It doesn’t pile and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling sticky. The product also features purple rice extract, which lends it the deeper color.
The Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier is suitable for all skin types. It’s meant to support the skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid reservoir, renew plumpness, elasticity and firmness. The appearance of crow’s feet, marionette lines and wrinkles is reduced. The skin is left looking smoother and plumper. I like to add it to my skincare routine on those mornings when I use a Vitamin C serum or on those nights when I’m using a Retinol. I layer a few drops of the H.A. Intensifer over the Vitamin C or Retinol, then follow with my moisturizer. I have definitely seen a visible difference in the texture and look of my skin. I highly recommend it. Every skin type can benefit from this little wondrous acid.

Since I already use the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, and since it sounds like it pairs perfectly with the HA product, I think I will definitely be ordering it as soon as I finish my current HA product. Thank you for your thorough review!:)
