A few weeks ago, I wrote a post titled The Battle of the Facial Rollers: Jade vs. Rose Quartz. The post was very well received and the feedback was pleasingly overwhelming. Particularly, the majority of readers seemed to genuinely appreciate the information delivered in the format in which it was provided, see here. So with new found inspiration, I decided to turn it into a series. I now welcome you to The Battle of the Eyelash Curlers: Surrat vs. Kevyn Aucoin!
Let’s begin …
1..Are eyelash curlers essentials?
If you had asked me this question about two years ago, I would have vehemently told you No and to save your money. I had tried a plethora of eyelash curlers from the drugstore (Revlon, Cover Girl, Sally Hansen, and Tweezerman) and found that they just didn’t lift or curl my lashes all that well and the curl never seemed to last. Plus, most of them grabbed hold of the skin and that really hurt. But now having tried some high-end options such as the Kevyn Aucoin and Surrat eyelash curlers, I’m singing a different tune. These curlers lift my lashes in a very effortless way, without grabbing or tugging at the skin and the curl lasts throughout the day. They also sit well in my hands without slipping. A great eyelash curler is a wonderful product and a must-have for me.
2. How do you use your eyelash curler?
I always start with mascara-free lashes. I apply the curler as close to the lash line as comfortably possible and give it a gentle squeeze, holding the squeeze for about 10 seconds. And that’s it for most days. If I have more time to spend on my lashes, after the first squeeze, I pull the curler out about a millimeter, moving it very subtly along the eyelash, and give it another squeeze. Then one more millimeter and another gentle squeeze. That’s three gentle squeezes in total, about 10 seconds for each squeeze.
3. What differences have you noticed between the Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler and the Surrat Relevee Lash Curler?
The design and material constitute the main differences between these two eyelash curlers. The Kevyn Aucoin is made from polished stainless steel and is incredibly light. You open it and there is absolutely no resistance. It has a slightly curvier head and a red silicone pad. The Surrat Eyelash Curler feels heavier and there is a bit more resistance. It’s coated with a matte material that ensures no slipping and comes with a black silicone pad. I’ve not experienced any breakage or pinching with either one of these curlers. The silicone pads are gentler on the lashes than the rubberized ones often found with some drugstore curlers and there is less damage on the lashes over time.
Both curlers seem to accommodate all eye shapes, with the Kevyn Aucoin curler opening up a bit wider. They both catch every eyelash without pinching. The handles on the Kevyn Aucoin are a bit elongated and they fit my fingers more comfortably. Both are Made in Japan.
4. How does each perform in comparison to the other?
Both eyelash curlers perform incredibly well. They both gracefully curl, bend and extend my lashes, with zero breakage and pinching. The curl lasts throughout the day. Because the Kevyn Aucoin is slightly curvier, it’s a better match for my almond-shaped hooded eyes and thus it spreads my lashes in a more uniform way.
5. Which one would you repurchase?
The Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler retails for $21. The Surrat Relevee Lash Curler retails for $30. If I were to lose both of these curlers, the one that I would repurchase is the Kevyn Aucoin. Not just because of the price, but it seems to fit my eye shape and eye size better. As a result, the Kevyn Aucoin lifts and fans my eyelashes in a more natural way. I’m also not a fan of the Surrat handles and for me that’s a deal-breaker! The Surrat handle design has a small opening that catches the skin on my thumb every time I use it. And that doesn’t feel comfortable.
If you’re interested in any of these two curlers, I would suggest purchasing from Sephora during their VIB Sale when they offer 20% off or from Spring. Spring is an online beauty retailer that often times offers 20% off high end brands (such as Kevyn Aucoin and Surrat, as well as Tom Ford, Charlotte Tilbury, Armani Beauty and Dior, just to name a few).

Such incredible tips & points. Loved reading it and felt ‘guilty’ for missing out on just a helpful tool all along *duh me* The only eyelash curler I’ve ever tried has been a Shiseido one many years ago, which didn’t do anything for my lashes at all. Since then, I never returned or decided to try a different one!
Because I share the same eye shape as you, will def aim to go with your recommendation next time Spring website has a sale. Thank you so much dalring 👏🏼💖🌹

Hi Anxhela, your comments always make my day. So happy you enjoyed the post. I’d suggest trying the Kevyn Aucoin curler if you get a chance. Spring is actually running a 20% off event right now, but I’m not sure which brands are included. Definitely check their site! ~ Cat L.

I love these comparison posts Cat! I’ve been using the Shiseido eyelash curler for years not because I particularly love it, I just haven’t bothered trying to find something better 😅 From your review it sounds like the Kevyn Aucoin one is a winner, and I like that it’s reasonably priced as well. Will have to add it to my Sephora wishlist for the next VIB sale!

Thank you Jenny for stopping by. The Shiseido is supposed to be a good one as well. The reason why I was looking for another eyelash curler (and thus purchased the Surrat) is because my Kevyn Aucoin is on its last leg. I’ve had it for several years and this is the last silicone pad I have for it. I wonder if I can just purchase the pads individually as the curler itself is still good. Will have to check at Sephora! Thank you again for reading! ~ Cat L.

Such a great post! I’ve been wanting to try KA curler for a while~ I do have the Surrat curler but it didn’t live up to all the hype for for: feels too stiff and it takes more effort to use it than others I love… Over time, the stiffness kind of softened but still I just don’t reach for it often… My all time fav is Suqqu lash curler! It works so effortlessly! And that suqqu I couldn’t go back to Shu Uemura or Shiseido which have been my HG lash curlers throughout my teens and 20s! I do wana try out one from NARS soon and KA! 😘

Thank you for reading and commenting Lisa. It appeared I was the only one in the beauty community on Instagram that didn’t like the Surrat curler, so it’s refreshing to see you share my opinion. Suqqu is not that easy to get here in the States, but I have only heard rave reviews on their products. Will have to try! ~ Cat L.

Hello, lovely Cat! Thanks for the in-depth comparison of the eyelash curlers. The one from Kevin Aucoin caught my eye as well. I have a curler from Shiseido which I rarely use, because I don’t see much difference. But I will use it today after reading your method of lash curling. 🙂

Thank you Daphne! My eyelashes are short and stubby so using a curler is a must. I can’t believe I went years without using one! Definitely give the Kevyn Aucoin a try! ~ Cat L.

I’ve used eyes lash curlers in the past and like you said Cat It never really holds the curl for a longtime, on top of that it pulls the lash and my skin so I gave up eye lash curlers. But when I read your review it makes me curious , even your curling method seems more strategic. I think I’m going to give it a second chance and try lash curler you suggest. Thanks Cat! good post.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Nina. I shared a similar experience and didn’t see the point to using an eyelash curler. But now I cant be without it! Hope it works out for you, keep me posted! ~ Cat L.
