One of the very first packages I received upon returning home after the whole Hurricane Irma ordeal (sharing a very personal post here) was a beautifully wrapped box from Burberry. Burberry makes some of my favorite lipsticks, their formulas have always been so comfortable and easy on my lips. So naturally, I was quite intrigued to discover the box contained their Lip Velvet Matte Liquid Lipsticks. Matte lipsticks are all the rage at the moment and these Lip Velvets have been highly raved about all over the blogosphere. If there is anyone who can change the matte lipstick game, I knew it’d be Burberry!
Searching for the perfect matte formula …
Let’s address the obvious: the matte liquid trend is here to stay! And so far, so has that ceaseless quest to find the perfect non-drying, comfortable, long-lasting formula. With every major beauty brand now fully onboard the matte movement, options are galore. The Burberry Lip Velvets are quite different from any other matte liquid lip products I’ve tried so far. Most notably, the formula is a cream texture that molds to the lip contours and veils the lips to provide a soft-matte, velvet finish. It’s lightweight. It feels like the most expensive silk velvet. It’s simply stunning.
I would say the Lip Velvets feel just as comfortable and hydrating as lip balms, but of course, with saturated color, intense opacity and impressive lasting power. The sumptuous formula keeps the pout supple and moisturized, preventing the lips from drying out and ensuring the color doesn’t fade or crack. Immediately upon application, the lips feel cushion-soft, a sensation that lingers throughout the day.
In terms of longevity, although the Lip Velvet formula is fairly resistant, I do find that it begins to wear off with eating and drinking. However it leaves behind a beautiful, soft stain, which is still a flattering look. In my experience, the Lip Velvets last for about 5-6 hours without the need for a touch-up. But that is not a point of discontentment, given the formula is so incredibly comfortable and kind on the lips.
Choosing the right shade …
The Burberry Lip Velvet liquid range includes a mixture of really wearable colors in 14 unique shades, from brights and bolds to every day colors. I have three of their most popular, iconic shades to show you today: Fawn, Bright Plum and Oxblood. Each shade equally as exquisite and perfectly fitting in my wardrobe.
How to apply …
The Burberry Lip Velvets come in an elegant frosted tube that looks like glass but thankfully is not (I cannot tell you how many glass bottles have been deemed casualties over the years!). The pointy doe-foot applicator is incredibly easy to use, pulls out just the right amount and eliminates the need for a lip liner. I start by using the tip of the applicator to line my lips and then gently fill them in with color. One swipe is enough to create an even, opaque look and prevent re-dipping. My lips are naturally webbed by lines (I like to blame it on genetics) and this is the only matte liquid lipstick formula that has the ability to fill the lines of my lips thanks to the cream-like consistency and make my lips appear even.
Burberry Lip Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Fawn (No. 5)
The nude lip has become somewhat of a signature look for me over the years. It is my comfort zone. Burberry Lip Velvet in Fawn is the perfect option. My fail safe, every day lip color. It is a warm-toned, rosewood nude that complements almost every skin tone. It gives definition to my lips without making them look overdone.
Burberry Lip Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Bright Plum (No. 49)
Wearing lipstick has the same effect on me as wearing a powerful suit. I work from home so my typical attire is yoga pants and Tee but the minute I slap some lipstick on, I instantly feel put together and ready to tackle the day. Burberry Lip Velvet in Bright Plum is the kind of powerful shade that can uplift my spirits and provide an instant pick-me-up. It is a refined, rich plum color (hence the name!) that enhances and livens up the complexion. It pairs well with an understated, soft eye look, as well as with a seductive smokey eye.
Burberry Lip Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Oxblood (No. 53)
Bold shades in general can be quite intimidating but when done right, they can add a touch of sophistication to any look. Burberry Lip Velvet in Oxblood is a wintery wine, burgundy shade that strikes the perfect balance of effortless elegance and refinement without looking like you’re trying too hard. It is the kind of shade I always find myself drawn to especially this time of the year, heading into Fall and Winter.
Final Thoughts …
The Lip Velvets from design powerhouse Burberry are the new age of matte liquid lipsticks! I would highly recommend trying them even if you’re not a matte lipstick lover (yet). What I like the most about the Burberry Lip Velvets is the way they feel on my lips. They are as comfortable, easy to wear and kind on the lips as any matte liquid lipstick ought to be!
Although these lipsticks were kindly sent to me by Burberry (pinch me now!), I pride myself on the fact that my opinion is always my uncensored opinion. It cannot be swayed or influenced. I always try to be fair and impartial with my reviews. I can honestly say, hand on heart, that these Burberry Lip Velvets are some of my most favorite liquid mattes. In fact, I have already purchased a few of the shades from Sephora as gifts and have some of the shades on my personal wishlist for Christmas. Because that’s the thing about these Lip Velvets, they will always leave you wanting more … one in each shade!

Overall I think finding a good liquid lipstick is a tad bit tricky. I find that most are over-drying and can end up looking a bit odd over time. However, your post has persuaded me to go to Sephora and try out the “Fawn” shade! Stunning captures!

Thank you so much for this wonderful review Cat! I’m planning to add some darker matte shades to my collection this fall, and these Burberry beauties seem like the perfect addition! I especially adore Fawn (who doesn’t love a beautiful nude lip) and Oxblood, will have to check both of those out during the Sephora VIB sale!
