I know what some of you might be thinking. I already wash my face once, but twice in one sitting? Who’s got time for that?! Well, I’m hoping we all do after hearing what I’m about to tell you in this post.
While cleansing might be obvious to some and perhaps not worth investing in for others, these days cleansing the skin is no longer about just washing your face. Today’s cleansers are miracle workers that prep and prime the skin to better absorb nutrients provided by treatment products, such as serums and moisturizers. Serums and moisturizers already come with a hefty price tag, so why not give your skin the best opportunity to absorb these active ingredients?
Although I understand and acknowledge the importance of a proper cleansing routine, I’ve always been a little apprehensive about over cleansing. My skin is super sensitive and fussy on most days. It is very important to me that the products I use are gentle yet effective. So, I was thrilled to discover the new Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual, the basic necessities required to properly double cleanse. Everything neatly packed in one beautiful set complete with a muslin cloth! But what is double cleansing and why do we need to incorporate it in our already lengthy beauty routines?
What is Double Cleansing?
I first became familiar with the term ‘double cleansing’ a few years ago, while perusing beauty blogs and watching YouTube skincare videos. And it turned out I had already been double cleansing and didn’t even know it! Double cleansing is a simple (yet very fancy) way of saying if you’re wearing makeup or SPF you need to clean your skin twice: once to remove the makeup/SPF and once to rid the skin of daily impurities (grime, dirt, pollution, you get the gist). It works for all skin types. Sounds simple enough and it is.
First Cleanse
The first cleanse removes makeup and/or SPF. You can use micellar water, face wipes, or a good cleansing milk/balm/oil designed for this purpose. Experiment with different textures and find what your skin best responds to. What’s most important to me is to remove all traces of makeup with minimal work and without tugging at the skin. The Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual 1 does all of that, plus removes mascara, eyebrow pomade and any stubborn matte liquid lipstick. It’s a citrus coconut oil-based balm that works to improve the tone, texture and clarity of the skin. Some key ingredients worth mentioning: Vitamin C (to boost skin’s radiance), Citrus, Bergamot and Rose Oils (to soothe), Inca Inchi Oil (to relive dryness), Kalahari Watermelon Oil (to balance the skin). You can find a complete list of ingredients here.
The balm has such a beautiful, lush texture that glides effortlessly over the skin turning into a makeup-melting oil. Immerse the muslin cloth into warm water, lightly press over the face for about 10-20 seconds to open the pores and gently wipe away the makeup or SPF.
Second Cleanse
The second cleanse is when you really rid the skin of all the dirt, grime, and pollutants that accumulate, going beyond the surface. I recommend using a good, gentle cleanser with quality ingredients. You need a cleanser that goes beyond just removing makeup, but rather conditions the skin to absorb the nutrients from products you apply afterwards (masks, toners, serums, creams, depending on your routine).
The Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual 2 is a charcoal-based cream designed to tackle deeper-rooted environmental dirt and grime. It thoroughly cleanses the skin without stripping it of essential moisture and disrupting the skin’s natural balance. Perfect for every skin type, this gentle cleanser is formulated with: Bamboo Charcoal (to attract and draw out impurities from beneath the skin’s surface), Nordic Beauty Peat (to restore the skin’s pH), Vitamin B3 (to improve skin’s defense), Citrus, Bergamot and Rose Oils (to soothe). You can find a complete list of ingredients here.
The cream-like texture is so easy to work with! Simply place a small amount into your hands and massage gently into the skin using upward, circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water or remove using the muslin cloth included in the set. Pat dry and follow with a mask or toner depending on your routine. This cleanser feels so soothing on my sensitive complexion and doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry.
I hope after reading this post you’ll try the double cleansing method. And as the time goes by, if you find yourself needing a bit of help picking and choosing cleansers, definitely check out the Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual. It’s so easy to use, yet it benefits the skin so much!
